In the first part of Shapechanger’s Birth Mary awakens in her grave, escapes it, and finds there is no going home. She decides to journey to Kilrush, a medium-sized city south of Galway beside the Shannon River, mighty so close to the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way she discovers much of what she has become, meets three would-be rapists and murderers to their (brief-lived) sorrow. In Kilrush she finds a home and friends, but not without teaching a bully a lesson.
