I’ve finalized my book cover. I learned a few lessons on the way.
One factor to consider is how my cover will look at different distances. What do I want readers to see at each distance?
Amazon’s four different sizes approximate what they would physically see in a bookstore. Here are the ones on their web site. Notice the additional detail as readers get “closer” to the cover.
Here I mostly notice a girl with guns. People who like this sort of thing will go closer.
On this one I notice the blob in the previous one is a flying car. So the book is a bit futuristic.
The next is what is shown on Amazon’s page devoted to a single title.
Now the title text stands out. I put a large drop shadow under it and made it yellow. This is complementary to the blue sky and makes the text stand out even more.
The other text is now readable enough that they might remind the reader s/he has seen both the series ID and my name.
And finally what the reader sees if s/he clicks on the cover image on the page devoted to this book. It expands to the full cover image, approximately the size of a physical book held comfortably.
If this cover was ever to be used for a “pbook” I’d want to fine-tune things like lighting, skin and hair colors, and such. But for purely ebook sales it will get the job done.
Now if only readers will buy the book, like it, and spread the word!
Improvement in this cover over last e-book’s cover. At first, I thought that the contrast between the gi and the background (sky and clouds) was low but it is OK even in the smallest image.
Police vehicle shows that it is a future / alternate world story.
